What is on Jorah's wrist?

Published in Game of Thrones Lore 2 mins read

Jorah Mormont's wrist, in the later seasons of Game of Thrones, has Greyscale.

Greyscale is a fictional, highly contagious disease in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe (and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones). It's a disfiguring and ultimately fatal condition where the skin becomes stiff, cracked, and stone-like, hence the name.

Here's a breakdown of what Greyscale does:

  • Appearance: The disease causes the skin to thicken and become scaly, taking on a greyish, stone-like appearance. As it progresses, the affected area can become scabbed and may contain pus.

  • Progression: Greyscale starts in a localized area, such as a hand or foot, and slowly spreads across the body.

  • Effects: The disease hardens and calcifies the skin, severely restricting movement and causing intense pain. Untreated, Greyscale eventually affects the entire body and mind, leading to madness and death.

  • Jorah's Case: Jorah contracted Greyscale after saving Tyrion Lannister from stone men in the ruins of Valyria. The disease manifested on his wrist and gradually spread up his arm. He sought treatment from Samwell Tarly at the Citadel, who performed a risky procedure to remove the infected tissue. While painful, the procedure successfully halted the progression of the disease, saving Jorah's life (for a time, at least).
