How to Store Carrots in Sand?

Published in Gardening 1 min read

To store carrots in sand, trim the tops, keep the carrots unwashed and slightly dirty, then layer them in a container of damp sand.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Preparation: Don't wash the carrots. Leave some dirt on them. Trim the green tops off. Leaving a tiny bit of the stem is fine. This prevents the greens from drawing moisture from the carrots during storage.

  • Container: Choose a container with drainage holes. A wooden crate or a plastic tub can work.

  • Sand: Use damp sand. The sand shouldn't be soaking wet, just moist enough to clump together slightly when squeezed.

  • Layering:

    • Place a layer of damp sand at the bottom of the container.
    • Arrange the carrots so they are not touching each other.
    • Cover the carrots with another layer of damp sand.
    • Repeat the layers of carrots and sand until the container is full.
  • Storage: Store the container in a cool, dark place, such as a root cellar or a basement. Ideal temperatures are near freezing but above freezing.

The sand helps maintain humidity and keeps the carrots from drying out, extending their storage life. By keeping them cool and slightly moist, the sand allows the carrots to last for several months.
