How Do I Add an Image to a Picture in GIMP?

Published in GIMP Image Editing 2 mins read

To add an image to another picture in GIMP, you'll essentially be adding it as a new layer. Here are two methods:

Method 1: Open as Layers

  1. Open the base image you want to add to in GIMP.
  2. Go to File > Open as Layers.
  3. Select the image you want to add and click Open. This will import the selected image as a new layer on top of your base image.

Method 2: Drag and Drop

  1. Open the base image in GIMP.
  2. Locate the image you want to add on your computer.
  3. Drag and drop the image file directly onto the GIMP canvas. This will also add the image as a new layer.

After Adding the Image:

Once the image is added as a layer, you can then manipulate it:

  • Move: Use the Move tool (M) to position the image where you want it.
  • Scale: Use the Scale tool (Shift + S) to resize the image.
  • Rotate: Use the Rotate tool (Shift + R) to rotate the image.
  • Adjust Layer Order: In the Layers panel, drag the layer up or down to change its position relative to other layers (e.g., put it behind the base image).
  • Adjust Opacity: In the Layers panel, adjust the opacity of the layer to make it more or less transparent.

Remember to save your work as an XCF file (GIMP's native format) to preserve the layers and allow for future editing. You can then export it as a JPG, PNG, or other image format.
