How do I export my Google Photos?

To export your Google Photos, use Google Takeout:

Steps to Export Your Google Photos

  1. Go to Google Takeout: Open your web browser and navigate to Google Takeout.

  2. Select Google Photos (and/or Google Drive):

    • You will see a list of Google products.
    • Deselect all products by clicking "Deselect all".
    • Scroll down and specifically select "Google Photos". If you also want to export photos backed up to Google Drive, select that too.
    • Click "Next step" to proceed.
  3. Customize Your Export:

    • Delivery Method: Choose how you want to receive your exported files. Options include:
      • Send download link via email
      • Add to Drive
      • Add to Dropbox
      • Add to OneDrive
      • Add to Box
    • Frequency: Choose to export once or schedule exports every 2 months for 1 year.
    • File type & size: Select the file type (.zip or .tgz) and the maximum archive size (from 1 GB to 50 GB). If your data exceeds the specified size, it will be split into multiple files.
  4. Create Export: After configuring your export options, click "Create export."

  5. Wait for Processing: Google will prepare your archive(s). This process can take hours or even days, depending on the amount of data. You'll receive an email notification when the export is complete and ready for download.

  6. Download Your Archive(s): Once the export is ready, follow the link in the email to download your archive(s).

Important Considerations:

  • File Size: Consider the file size when choosing your archive format. Smaller file sizes might be easier to manage, but larger archives can be more efficient.
  • Storage: Ensure you have enough storage space on your computer or chosen destination to accommodate the exported files.
  • Organization: The exported photos will be organized into folders based on the album or the date they were uploaded.
  • Google Drive: If you want to only download specific Google Drive files, visit Google Drive, select the files you would like to download, and select "Download".
  • Photo Quality: By default, Google Photos stores photos in a compressed format. When exporting, you can choose to export the original, uncompressed versions, if available.
