The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was a Canadian government agency responsible for administering foreign aid programs in developing countries. Established in 1968, CIDA's mandate was to reduce poverty, promote human rights, and support sustainable development around the world.
Key Functions of CIDA:
- Poverty Reduction: CIDA focused on projects and initiatives aimed at improving living standards, providing access to basic services, and creating economic opportunities for people in developing countries.
- Sustainable Development: Promoting environmentally sustainable practices and responsible resource management was a core objective.
- Human Rights and Good Governance: CIDA supported projects aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting human rights, and fostering good governance in partner countries.
- Humanitarian Assistance: Providing emergency relief and humanitarian aid to countries affected by natural disasters, conflict, or other crises.
Important Note:
In 2013, CIDA was merged into the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), which was subsequently renamed Global Affairs Canada. While CIDA no longer exists as a separate entity, its functions and objectives are now carried out within Global Affairs Canada.
