How Do You Fill a Pen Tool Line?

Published in Graphic Design 3 mins read

To fill a path created with the Pen Tool (in programs like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator), you use the "Fill Path" option after creating a closed path.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

Steps to Fill a Pen Tool Path:

  1. Create a Closed Path: First, use the Pen Tool to draw the shape you want to fill. Ensure the path is closed, meaning the start and end points connect. An open path will not create a proper fill.

  2. Access the "Fill Path" Option: There are several ways to do this, depending on the software:

    • Right-Click/Control-Click: Right-click (PC) or Control-click (Mac) inside the path area. A context menu will appear. Select the "Fill Path..." option.
    • Paths Panel: In Adobe Photoshop, open the Paths panel (Window > Paths). Select the path you want to fill. Then, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the Paths panel and choose "Fill Path...".
    • Illustrator: In Adobe Illustrator, the process is similar to Photoshop. Open the "Paths" panel if necessary (Window > Path).
  3. Configure the Fill: A dialog box will appear, offering various fill options:

    • Use: This allows you to specify what kind of fill you want.

      • Color: Fills the path with a solid color. You will then select a color from the Color Picker.
      • Pattern: Fills the path with a selected pattern.
      • Foreground/Background Color: Uses the currently selected foreground or background color.
    • Blending Mode: (Optional) Choose a blending mode to blend the fill with any underlying layers or elements.

    • Opacity: (Optional) Adjust the opacity of the fill.

    • Feather Radius: (Optional) Applies a feather effect to the edges of the fill. A higher radius creates a softer edge.

  4. Click "OK": Once you've configured the fill settings, click "OK" to apply the fill to the path.

Key Considerations:

  • Closed Paths are Essential: The "Fill Path" option works best with closed paths. If the path isn't closed, the software will usually try to connect the endpoints with a straight line before filling, which might not be what you intended.
  • Layers: Be aware of which layer your path and fill are on. The fill will be applied to the current layer.
  • Non-Destructive Workflow: In Photoshop, consider using a Shape Layer instead of directly filling a path. Shape Layers are vector-based and allow for easier editing later. Create a new Shape Layer with the Pen Tool by ensuring that the Pen Tool mode is set to "Shape" in the options bar at the top of the screen.
