What does Grendel do with the corpse in Chapter 4?

Published in Grendel's Actions 1 min read

In Chapter 4 of Grendel, Grendel carries the corpse of a dead man to the mead-hall, attempting to communicate and express his desire for friendship and mercy to the humans.

Overcome by the powerful song of the Shaper, Grendel is compelled to approach the human hall with the body. He staggers toward the hall, holding the corpse in his hands, all the while crying out for mercy and declaring himself to be a friend.

Despite his efforts to convey his intentions, the men do not understand Grendel's cries or his gesture. Instead of recognizing his plea, they perceive him as a threat and react with violence. The men promptly chase Grendel out of the town, armed with battle-axes and poison-tipped spears, driving him away from the hall and the settlement.
