How long can hair grow?

Published in Hair growth 1 min read

The average length of hair growth is two to three feet (610mm - 914mm) before it stops growing. This is because hair follicles eventually devitalize. However, some individuals may have unusual hair development abnormalities that allow their hair to grow to longer lengths.

Hair growth is determined by the length of time a hair strand remains in the anagen phase (growing phase), also known as the terminal length. The anagen phase can last between 2 and 7 years for most people, but it can be longer for some.

The average hair growth rate is between 0.5 and 1.7 centimeters per month, which means hair can theoretically grow quite long over time. While the average person's hair growth may stop around two to three feet, factors like genetics, hair health, and hair care practices can affect the maximum length a person's hair can reach.
