What are the 27 bones in the hand?

Published in Hand Anatomy 1 min read

The hand consists of 27 bones, divided into three categories:

  • 8 carpal bones in the wrist: These small bones form the base of the hand, allowing for a range of wrist movements.
  • 5 metacarpal bones in the palm: These long bones connect the wrist to the fingers.
  • 14 phalanges in the fingers: Each finger (except the thumb) has three phalanges (proximal, middle, and distal), while the thumb has only two (proximal and distal).

These bones, along with the hand joints, provide support, flexibility, and dexterity, allowing us to perform a wide variety of activities and movements.
