How Do You Grow Oregano From Stems?

Published in Herb Propagation 1 min read

Growing oregano from stems, also known as propagation by cuttings, is a simple and effective way to start new plants. It primarily involves taking a stem from an existing healthy plant and encouraging it to root.

To grow oregano from stems:

  1. Select a Healthy Stem: Choose a stem from a healthy oregano plant that has nice green leaves.
  2. Prepare the Cutting: Strip down the bottom leaves off the stem. This prevents the leaves submerged in water from rotting.
  3. Root in Water: Stick the prepared stem directly into a glass of water. Place the glass in a spot with indirect sunlight. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh. Roots should begin to form within a few weeks.
  4. Plant in Soil: Once the roots are about an inch or two long, the cutting is ready to be transplanted into a small pot filled with well-draining potting mix or directly into your garden bed if conditions are suitable.

This method is based on the principle of vegetative propagation, allowing you to clone your favorite oregano plants. Ensure the cutting remains in a stable environment until roots develop.
