Islam, as a distinct religion, is generally considered to be around 1400 years old, dating back to the 7th century CE.
While the historical understanding places the origin of Islam with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad in Mecca and Medina, Muslims themselves believe that the principles of Islam have existed since the beginning of time. They see Muhammad not as the founder of a new religion, but as the last in a line of prophets, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Jesus, who all preached the same fundamental message of submission to one God (Allah).
Therefore, depending on the perspective, Islam is either approximately 1400 years old from a historical viewpoint, or as old as humanity according to Islamic belief.
