Who invented swimming?

Published in History of Swimming 1 min read

No single individual invented swimming. Swimming developed gradually over time.

While we can't credit a specific person with "inventing" swimming, archaeological evidence suggests the practice existed as early as 2500 BCE in Egypt, and later in Assyrian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. Swimming served both practical and military purposes in these societies. In Greece and Rome, it was even a component of military training and basic male education, alongside literacy.

Therefore, swimming is best understood as an ancient practice refined over centuries, rather than a sudden invention.
