How to Use Wall Plugs in Drywall?

Published in Home Improvement 3 mins read

Using wall plugs in drywall allows you to securely hang items that are heavier than what a nail or screw alone can hold. Here's how to do it correctly:

1. Choose the Right Wall Plug

  • Drywall Anchors: These are designed specifically for drywall and come in various types, including self-drilling, expansion anchors, and toggle bolts.
  • Weight Capacity: Consider the weight of the item you'll be hanging and choose a wall plug with the appropriate weight rating. The packaging will usually indicate this.
  • Type of Plug:
    • Self-Drilling Anchors: These anchors have a pointed tip that allows you to screw them directly into the drywall without pre-drilling. They are suitable for lighter loads.
    • Expansion Anchors: These anchors require a pre-drilled hole. When you insert the screw, the anchor expands, gripping the drywall. They are suitable for medium loads.
    • Toggle Bolts: These anchors are best for heavy loads. They consist of a bolt and a spring-loaded wing. You insert the bolt and wing through a pre-drilled hole, and the wing opens up behind the drywall, providing a strong hold.

2. Prepare the Wall

  • Location: Decide where you want to hang your item. Use a level to ensure proper alignment.
  • Check for Obstructions: Before drilling, check for hidden electrical wires, plumbing, or studs. You can use a stud finder with electrical detection to help with this. Avoid drilling into these!
  • Mark the Spot: Use a pencil to mark the exact location where you will insert the wall plug.

3. Drill the Hole (If Required)

  • Drill Bit Size: Choose a drill bit size that matches the diameter of the wall plug as indicated on the packaging.
  • Drilling Technique: Hold the drill perpendicular to the wall and apply steady pressure. Drill slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the drywall.
  • Depth: Drill the hole deep enough to accommodate the entire length of the wall plug.

4. Insert the Wall Plug

  • Self-Drilling Anchors: Screw the anchor directly into the drywall using a screwdriver or drill.
  • Expansion Anchors: Insert the anchor into the pre-drilled hole. Gently tap it with a hammer if necessary.
  • Toggle Bolts: Fold the wings of the toggle bolt and insert it through the pre-drilled hole. Once the wings are fully inside the wall, they will spring open.

5. Insert the Screw

  • Screw Length: Use a screw that is long enough to pass through the item you are hanging and securely into the wall plug.
  • Screwing Technique: Insert the screw through the item you are hanging and into the wall plug. Tighten the screw until the item is securely attached to the wall. Avoid over-tightening, as this can damage the drywall.

Example Scenario:

Let's say you want to hang a 5lb picture frame. You decide to use a self-drilling drywall anchor rated for 10 lbs.

  1. You mark the location on the wall where you want to hang the picture.
  2. You screw the self-drilling anchor directly into the drywall at the marked location.
  3. You insert a screw (of appropriate length) through the picture frame's hanging hardware and into the drywall anchor.
  4. You tighten the screw until the picture frame is securely attached to the wall.

By following these steps, you can confidently and safely use wall plugs in drywall to hang various items in your home. Remember to always choose the right type of wall plug for the weight of the item you are hanging and to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
