How Do I Text an Apple ID?

Published in iMessage Tips 2 mins read

You can text someone using their Apple ID (i.e., their email address associated with their Apple account) through the Messages app on your iPhone. Here's how:

  1. Open the Messages App: Launch the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Start a New Message: Tap the new message icon (usually a pencil on a square) located at the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Enter the Apple ID: In the "To:" field, type the recipient's Apple ID (their email address). You can also type their name if their Apple ID is associated with a contact in your address book. The Messages app should recognize it as an iMessage contact. Alternatively, tap the "+" icon to the right of the "To:" field to select the contact from your contact list.
  4. Compose Your Message: Tap the text field at the bottom of the screen to bring up the keyboard and type your message.
  5. Send Your Message: Tap the blue send arrow to send your message. If the recipient is using an Apple device and has iMessage enabled, the message will be sent as an iMessage (blue bubble). If not, it will be sent as a regular SMS/MMS text message (green bubble), if possible based on your iPhone settings.

Important Considerations:

  • iMessage must be enabled: Both you and the recipient need to have iMessage enabled in Settings > Messages for the message to be sent as an iMessage.
  • Apple ID association: The recipient's email address must be registered as an Apple ID and associated with their iMessage account.
  • Green vs. Blue Bubbles: A blue message bubble indicates an iMessage, while a green bubble indicates a standard SMS/MMS text message. The color depends on whether the recipient's device can receive iMessages.
