How do you paint the inside of your house?

Published in Interior Painting 3 mins read

Painting the inside of your house involves several steps to ensure a smooth and professional finish. Here's a breakdown of how to do it:

Preparation is Key

Before you even open a can of paint, proper preparation is crucial. This includes:

  • Setting up work lights: Position at least two work lights, focusing on the wall you're starting with. This ensures you see every detail and avoid missing spots.
  • Removing or covering large items: Move furniture like sofas, bookcases, and beds out of the room, if possible, or at least into the center of the room and cover them with drop cloths.
  • Removing or covering small items: Take down wall hangings, picture frames, and other small items and either remove them from the room or place them out of the way.
  • Masking the trim: Use painter's tape to carefully mask off all trim, including baseboards, window casings, and door frames, for crisp, clean lines.
  • Taping the ceiling: If you’re not also painting the ceiling, tape the area where the walls meet the ceiling.

The Painting Process

Now that the space is prepped, it's time to paint:

  1. Apply Primer (Optional): If you are painting over a dark color, a glossy surface, or bare drywall, apply a coat of primer. Primer helps the paint adhere better and provides a uniform base coat.
  2. Mix the Paint: Thoroughly stir your paint to ensure consistent color and texture.
  3. Paint the Edges (Cutting In): Use an angled brush to carefully paint along the edges, trim, and ceiling. This is called "cutting in," and creates a neat outline for your roller.
Step Description
1. Set up work lights Use two or more work lights directed towards the first wall.
2. Remove/cover large items Move large objects or cover with protective cloths.
3. Remove/cover small items Remove or place out of the way small items.
4. Mask trim Apply painter's tape to all trim surfaces for sharp lines.
5. Tape ceiling If you aren't painting the ceiling, tape along the edges where it meets the walls.
6. Apply Primer Apply if needed, for better paint adhesion.
7. Mix Paint Thoroughly stir the paint.
8. Paint Edges (Cutting In) Use a brush to paint along edges and trim before using a roller.

Finishing Up

Once the first coat is dry, inspect for any thin spots or areas that need touch-ups. Apply a second coat for uniform coverage, allowing adequate drying time between coats. After the final coat, carefully remove all painter's tape before the paint is fully dry to avoid pulling the paint. Clean your tools and enjoy your freshly painted room!
