Is Gum Halal or Haram?

Published in Islamic Dietary Laws 1 min read

Whether chewing gum is halal or haram depends on its ingredients, but many chewing gums available today are halal due to the use of gum Arabic instead of animal-derived ingredients.

Many gums on the market are now halal-friendly because they've switched from animal-derived ingredients. Extra, Trident, Orbit, and Suifa are examples of gum brands that are often halal. Therefore, Muslim consumers should carefully examine the ingredient list when purchasing chewing gum to ensure it aligns with halal dietary requirements.

Specifically, look out for the following:

  • Gelatin: Gelatin is often derived from animal collagen, which would make the gum haram if the animal wasn't slaughtered according to Islamic law.
  • Animal-derived Glycerin or Fatty Acids: These ingredients, if derived from non-halal animals, would render the gum haram.
  • Alcohol: Though less common in gum, any presence of alcohol would make it haram.

To ensure a gum is halal, look for certifications from recognized halal certification bodies, or carefully read the ingredient list for assurance. Many companies are becoming more transparent about their sourcing and ingredients.
