What is Eid for kids?

Published in Islamic Holidays 2 mins read

Eid is a special holiday for Muslim kids (and everyone else!), celebrated twice a year, filled with fun, treats, and spending time with family and friends.

Two Main Eids

There are two main Eid celebrations in Islam:

  • Eid al-Fitr: This Eid marks the end of Ramadan, a month when Muslims fast (don't eat or drink) from sunrise to sunset. It's like a big party to celebrate finishing the fast!
  • Eid al-Adha: This Eid is known as the "Festival of Sacrifice" and celebrates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son. It's a time for remembering and being grateful for blessings.

What Happens During Eid?

Both Eids involve:

  • Special Prayers: Muslims go to the mosque to perform special Eid prayers in the morning.
  • Delicious Food: Families prepare yummy meals and treats to share with everyone. Think lots of sweets and special dishes!
  • Gifts and Money (Eidi): Kids often receive gifts or money (called "Eidi") from their family members.
  • New Clothes: It's common to wear new and fancy clothes for Eid.
  • Visiting Family and Friends: Eid is a time to visit relatives and friends, share food, and have fun together.
  • Charity: Giving to those in need is an important part of Eid.

Eid al-Fitr - The Sweet Eid

Because Eid al-Fitr celebrates breaking the fast, it's often filled with lots of sweet treats. Imagine cookies, candies, and cakes galore! It's a time to enjoy all the delicious food you couldn't eat during the day in Ramadan. It's known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast." It lasts for three days and is a joyful time for Muslims to celebrate with family, food, prayer, and other traditions after the long fast.

Eid al-Adha - The Eid of Sacrifice

Eid al-Adha focuses on remembering Prophet Ibrahim's story and being thankful for what you have. Some families may participate in offering a sacrifice (usually an animal), and the meat is shared with family, friends, and those in need.

In short, Eid is a joyful time of celebration, gratitude, and togetherness for Muslim kids and their families!
