Which Surah is Given at Death Bed?

Published in Islamic Practices 1 min read

While there isn't a single, universally prescribed Surah for recitation at a deathbed in Islam, Surah Yasin is strongly recommended.

The Importance of Surah Yasin at the Deathbed

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Recite Yasin over those who are dying." (Al Nasai) This Hadith highlights the significance of Surah Yasin in the final moments of life. Imam Ajurri (ra) further elaborated, stating that "When Surat Yasin is recited at the deathbed, Allah makes dying easy." These narrations suggest that reciting Surah Yasin is believed to bring comfort and ease to the dying person and may facilitate a peaceful transition.

Practical Application

  • Family members can recite Surah Yasin aloud near the dying person.
  • Trained individuals such as Imams or family members well-versed in recitation can perform this.
  • The recitation should be done with sincerity and respect for the deceased.

It is important to note that this is a sunnah (recommended practice) and not a compulsory ritual. Other Surahs and prayers may also be recited alongside or instead of Surah Yasin, depending on individual preference and circumstances.
