How did Allah create Adam?

Published in Islamic Theology 1 min read

Allah created Adam from clay, shaping it into a form.

According to the Qur'an, the creation of Adam involved several stages:

  • From Clay: The primary material used was clay. This is highlighted in verses such as: "We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape..." (Qur'an 15:26). This signifies the humble origin of humanity.
  • Molding and Shaping: The clay was not just any clay, but "mud moulded into shape," indicating a deliberate formation process.
  • Infusion of Life: After shaping the clay, Allah breathed life into the form, thus completing Adam's creation.

Essentially, the process involved transforming basic earth elements (clay) into a physical form, which was then enlivened by Allah's divine breath, resulting in the first human being, Adam. The Qur'an also states, "He began the creation of man from clay, and made his progeny from a quintessence of fluid" (32:7-8), further emphasizing the origin of humanity from clay and linking it to the subsequent creation of human progeny.
