What are Examples of Intravenous Injections?
Intravenous (IV) injections deliver fluids, medications, and nutrients directly into a person's vein. This method ensures rapid absorption and distribution throughout the body. Many different medications and fluids can be administered intravenously.
Medications:
- Chemotherapy drugs: Doxorubicin, vincristine, cisplatin, and paclitaxel are examples of cancer-fighting drugs commonly given intravenously. [Reference 1, Reference 3]
- Antibiotics: Vancomycin, meropenem, and gentamicin are among the antibiotics frequently administered via IV to effectively treat infections. [Reference 1, Reference 3]
- Antifungals: These medications target fungal infections and are sometimes delivered intravenously. [Reference 3]
- Pain medications (Analgesics): Certain pain relievers, particularly those needed for rapid pain relief or severe conditions, are administered intravenously. [Reference 3]
Fluids:
- IV Fluids (Intravenous Fluids): These are specially formulated liquids injected into a vein to prevent or treat dehydration. [Reference 4, Reference 10, Reference 11] They replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to illness, surgery, or other causes.
Other Substances:
- Contrast Media: These are used during medical imaging procedures like X-rays and CT scans to enhance the visibility of organs and blood vessels. While typically administered by power injectors, hand injection is also possible. [Reference 8]
- Nutrients: In certain situations, nutrients may be administered intravenously. [Reference 5]
- Immunoglobulins (IVIG): These are antibodies given intravenously to boost the immune system. This can be done at home through home infusion therapy. [Reference 7]
Note: The administration of intravenous injections should only be performed by trained medical professionals.
