How to Stop Your Laptop From Restarting Itself

Published in Laptop Restarting Prevention 2 mins read

To stop your laptop from restarting itself automatically, especially after a system error, you can disable the automatic restart feature in Windows settings.

Disable Automatic Restart in Windows

This method is particularly useful if your laptop is restarting unexpectedly after encountering errors (like a Blue Screen of Death), as the "Automatically restart" setting is often enabled by default to quickly get you back to using your computer.

Follow these steps to disable this setting:

  1. In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings. You can do this by typing "advanced system settings" in the search bar on the taskbar and selecting the corresponding result.
  2. In the System Properties window that appears, navigate to the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings. This button is located towards the bottom of the Advanced tab.
  4. A new "Startup and Recovery" window will pop up. Remove the check mark next to Automatically restart. This option is found under the "System failure" section.
  5. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
  6. Click OK again in the System Properties window to save the changes.
  7. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

By unchecking the "Automatically restart" option, if your laptop encounters a critical error, it will stop and display the error message instead of immediately restarting. This can be helpful for troubleshooting the root cause of the restarts.

It's important to note that this setting prevents automatic restarts specifically after a system failure. Other causes for restarts (like Windows Updates, scheduled tasks, or power settings) would need to be addressed separately, but disabling automatic restart on system failure is a key step if unexpected restarts are occurring.
