How Do I Adjust in Lightroom?

Published in Lightroom Editing 3 mins read

Adjusting photos in Lightroom involves manipulating various sliders to enhance the lighting, color, and details of your image. Here's a basic overview of how to get started:

Basic Adjustments

Most adjustments start in the "Basic" panel within Lightroom's Develop module. This panel contains the core controls you'll use most often.

Exposure

  • Purpose: Controls the overall brightness of the image.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Exposure slider to the right to brighten the photo or to the left to darken it. Be careful not to overexpose (lose detail in bright areas) or underexpose (lose detail in dark areas).

Contrast

  • Purpose: Affects the difference between the light and dark areas of the image.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Contrast slider to the right to increase contrast (making highlights brighter and shadows darker) or to the left to reduce contrast (making highlights and shadows closer in tone).

Highlights

  • Purpose: Controls the brightness of the brightest areas in the photo.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Highlights slider to the left to darken highlights and recover detail in blown-out areas. Dragging to the right will brighten the brightest parts, potentially losing detail.

Shadows

  • Purpose: Controls the brightness of the darkest areas in the photo.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Shadows slider to the right to brighten shadows and reveal detail in dark areas. Dragging to the left will darken shadows.

Whites

  • Purpose: Sets the white point, influencing the overall brightness and contrast.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Whites slider to the right until you start to see clipping (loss of detail) in the brightest areas. Back off slightly from that point. Moving it left will reduce the brightness of the white tones.

Blacks

  • Purpose: Sets the black point, influencing the overall contrast and depth of the image.
  • How to Adjust: Drag the Blacks slider to the left until you start to see clipping in the darkest areas. Then back off slightly. Moving it to the right will brighten the black tones.

Color Adjustments

White Balance

  • Purpose: Corrects color casts and ensures accurate colors.
  • How to Adjust: Use the Temp (Temperature) slider to adjust the warmth or coolness of the image (towards blue or yellow). Use the Tint slider to adjust the green or magenta tones. You can also use the White Balance selector (eyedropper tool) to click on a neutral gray area in the image to automatically set the white balance.

Vibrance and Saturation

  • Purpose: Controls the intensity of colors.
  • How to Adjust: Vibrance affects the intensity of muted colors without over-saturating already vibrant colors. Saturation affects the intensity of all colors equally. Generally, it's best to start with Vibrance.

Further Adjustments

Beyond the Basic panel, Lightroom offers numerous other adjustment tools, including:

  • Tone Curve: For fine-tuning contrast and tone.
  • HSL/Color: For adjusting individual color ranges.
  • Detail: For sharpening and noise reduction.
  • Lens Corrections: For correcting lens distortions and chromatic aberration.
  • Transform: For correcting perspective issues.

The best way to learn how to adjust in Lightroom is to experiment with these sliders and tools and see how they affect your images. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; you can always reset your adjustments.
