What is the structure of the lungs?

Published in Lung Anatomy 1 min read

The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system, responsible for gas exchange, and their structure is optimized for this function.

Lobes of the Lungs

The lungs are divided into lobes. According to the reference, the lung structure can be described as:

  • Right Lung: Composed of three lobes: the right upper lobe (RUL), the right middle lobe (RML), and the right lower lobe (RLL).
  • Left Lung: Composed of two lobes: the left upper lobe (LUL) and the left lower lobe (LLL).

Fissures

Fissures separate the lobes of the lungs:

  • The right lung has oblique and horizontal fissures separating its three lobes.
Lung Lobes Fissures
Right Lung Right Upper (RUL), Middle (RML), Lower (RLL) Oblique, Horizontal
Left Lung Left Upper (LUL), Lower (LLL) Oblique
