What is the Measurement of a Pull-Up?

Published in Manufacturing Measurement 1 min read

A pull-up, in the context of steel closures, is a measurement of the engagement between the cap lug and the neck finish, typically measured in 1/16" increments.

The "pull-up" refers to the distance between the leading edge of the cap lug and the mold parting line on the neck finish. This measurement is a non-destructive method used to assess how well the cap engages with the container.

The desired distance is typically 4/16", with an acceptable tolerance of plus or minus 2/16". This means the acceptable range is between 2/16" and 6/16".

Therefore, a pull-up measurement will be expressed as a fraction, where the denominator is 16 (representing increments of 1/16 of an inch), and the numerator indicates the distance measured. An ideal pull-up measurement is 4/16", but measurements within the range of 2/16" to 6/16" are usually acceptable.
