What Do Seals Drink?

Seals do not drink water in the conventional sense; instead, they obtain all the hydration they need directly from the food they consume.

How Seals Get Their Water

Marine mammals such as seals have remarkable physiological adaptations that allow them to thrive without the need to actively drink liquid water. Their internal systems are incredibly efficient at processing their diet—which commonly includes fish, squid, and crustaceans—to extract and recycle all necessary moisture.

  • Efficient Water Extraction: When seals consume their prey, their bodies are highly specialized in metabolizing the food to draw out and conserve every available drop of water. This advanced biological process ensures they remain hydrated, negating the need for them to seek out and drink water.
  • Avoiding Seawater: It is critically important for seals to avoid ingesting significant amounts of seawater. Drinking too much ocean water can be detrimental to their health, potentially leading to serious illness. Their kidneys are not equipped to efficiently process the high salt concentration found in seawater to adequately hydrate them; in fact, excessive consumption of saltwater would contribute to dehydration rather than hydration.

This unique evolutionary adaptation highlights how marine life has evolved intricate mechanisms to survive and maintain proper hydration within their challenging environments, without relying on freshwater sources.
