Published in Maritime Safety 1 min read

The SOLAS full form is International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

This international maritime treaty sets minimum safety standards for the construction, equipment, and operation of merchant ships. The SOLAS convention in its successive forms is generally regarded as the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships.

Essentially, SOLAS aims to ensure the safety of life at sea by providing regulations for:

  • Construction: Rules about the structural integrity of ships.
  • Equipment: Requirements for lifesaving appliances, radio communication systems, and other safety equipment.
  • Operation: Procedures for safe navigation, cargo handling, and other operational aspects.

The first version of SOLAS was adopted in response to the Titanic disaster in 1914. The current version is SOLAS, 1974, which has been updated and amended numerous times to keep pace with technological advancements and emerging safety concerns. Amendments are often made to address specific incidents and improve overall maritime safety.
