How do you measure impact strength?

Impact strength is measured through various testing methods, with the Charpy V-notch test being one of the most common.

The Charpy V-notch Test

This method uses a specially prepared metal specimen, machined to precise dimensions as set by industry standards. A notch, specifically a V-notch, is also machined into the middle of the specimen.

  • Procedure: A pendulum-type hammer is swung, impacting the specimen at the notch.
  • Measurement: The energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture is measured, which determines the impact strength. The amount of energy absorbed indicates the material's resistance to sudden impacts.
  • Purpose: This test helps evaluate how a material behaves under sudden, high-force applications and can indicate its susceptibility to brittle fracture.

Additional Information:

While the Charpy V-notch test is very common, it is not the only way to measure impact strength. Other tests include the Izod impact test, as well as variations on both methods. These tests differ in the way the specimen is held and the way impact is delivered.
