A vein needle is often called a butterfly needle, also known as a scalp vein set or a winged infusion set. This type of needle has plastic "wings" on either side of the hollow needle, which are used to access the vein. Butterfly needles are frequently used for blood draws and IV therapy, particularly in smaller veins.
