What was the French disease?

Published in Medical History 1 min read

The "French disease" was syphilis.

Girolamo Fracastoro, in his 1530 epic poem, Syphilis sive morbus gallicus ("Syphilis or The French Disease"), described syphilis as a terrible disease sent by the god Apollo. This poem helped popularize the term "French disease" (morbus gallicus) as a common name for syphilis during that era.
