- Sciatic Nerve Injury: The sciatic nerve runs close to this area, and improper injection technique can lead to nerve damage, causing pain, numbness, or even paralysis in the leg and foot.
- Superior Gluteal Artery Injury: Similarly, the superior gluteal artery is in proximity, posing a risk of vascular injury if the injection is not properly administered.
Due to these risks, healthcare professionals now prefer alternative and safer sites.
Recommended IM Injection Sites
Safer alternatives for IM injections include:
- Ventrogluteal Site: Located in the hip, this site is away from major blood vessels and nerves, making it a safer option.
- Deltoid Site: Located in the upper arm, the deltoid muscle is suitable for smaller volume injections.
- Vastus Lateralis Site: Located in the thigh, this site is often used for infants and young children.
