Period pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, is more common in teenagers and women under 30. According to research, it often starts within 6 to 12 months of a person's periods beginning.
Understanding Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is categorized into two types:
- Primary Dysmenorrhea: This type of period pain isn't caused by another condition. The pain typically starts at the beginning of the period each month and lasts for one to three days.
- Secondary Dysmenorrhea: This is pain caused by an underlying medical condition.
Age-Related Factors

Women Under 30 | Still susceptible to primary dysmenorrhea. Underlying conditions causing secondary dysmenorrhea may develop. |
Older Women | As women age, they might experience fewer issues with primary dysmenorrhea but could develop conditions leading to secondary dysmenorrhea. |
