How Do I Delete Texts?

Published in Messaging Apps 2 mins read

To delete texts (SMS/MMS messages) using the Messages by Google app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Messages App: Launch the "Messages by Google" application on your Android device.

  2. Select the Conversation: Tap on the conversation from which you want to delete a message.

  3. Select the Message(s):

    • Single Message: Tap and hold the specific message you want to delete. The selected message will be highlighted.
    • Multiple Messages: After selecting one message, you can tap on other messages within the conversation to select them as well.
  4. Delete: Tap the Delete icon (usually a trash can) located in the top right corner of the screen.

  5. Confirm Deletion: A confirmation prompt might appear. Tap Delete to confirm that you want to remove the selected message(s).

Important Considerations:

  • Deletion is Permanent (Usually): Once you delete a text message, it's generally gone for good unless you have a backup of your messages.
  • Recipient's Copy: Deleting a text message on your device does not delete it from the recipient's device.
  • RCS Messages: If you're using RCS (Rich Communication Services) and the other person is as well, deletion might work differently and might be able to be "undone" on both ends shortly after sending depending on the specific RCS implementation. Check with your carrier and Google for details on their implementation.
  • Third-Party Apps: If you are using a different messaging app than the default "Messages by Google", the process to delete texts may vary. Refer to the help documentation for that specific app.
