What Color Is Gold?

Published in Metal Color 1 min read

Gold is a yellowish-orange color, or orange-tan. This is similar to the color of the metal itself, often described as metallic gold.

The Hues of Gold

The color we perceive as "gold" can vary slightly depending on several factors:

  • Purity: The purer the gold, the more intense the yellowish-orange hue. Alloys, which mix gold with other metals, can alter the color. For example, rose gold incorporates copper, resulting in a reddish hue. White gold uses palladium or nickel to create a whiter appearance.

  • Lighting: The way light interacts with gold significantly impacts its perceived color. Different light sources can cause the gold to appear warmer or cooler in tone.

  • Surface Treatment: The finish of a gold object—polished, matte, brushed—can influence how light reflects, altering the perceived color.

  • Medium: Gold paint, for instance, can be formulated using different pigments, producing slightly different shades of gold, compared to the actual metal. Creating gold paint might involve mixing brown, yellow, and orange paints.

Metallic Gold vs. Gold Color

It's important to distinguish between "metallic gold" – the color of the actual gold metal—and the broader, more general term "gold" used to describe a range of yellowish-orange or orange-tan colors.
