How Do You Turn Off Colors on Your Phone?

Published in Mobile Accessibility 3 mins read

The process for turning off colors on your phone, essentially switching to grayscale mode, depends on your phone's operating system (Android or iOS) and manufacturer.

Turning Off Colors on Android

Android offers a system-wide grayscale mode, although the exact steps to access it may vary slightly depending on your phone's manufacturer and Android version. Here's the general procedure:

  1. Access Accessibility Settings: Open your phone's "Settings" app. Scroll down and look for "Accessibility." The name might vary slightly (e.g., "Vision," "Accessibility features").

  2. Find Color Correction (or Grayscale): Within the Accessibility settings, look for an option related to "Color Correction," "Color Adjustment," "Grayscale," or "Colorblindness." The wording varies among different Android versions and manufacturers.

  3. Enable Grayscale/Color Correction: Tap on the relevant option (e.g., "Color Correction") and then toggle the switch to turn it "On." You might need to select "Grayscale" as the color correction mode.

Samsung Specifics:

As the reference text indicates, Samsung's implementation can be a little different. There isn't a dedicated quick setting for grayscale. You often need to go into:

Settings > Digital Wellbeing and parental controls > Wind Down

Enabling Wind Down can optionally turn the screen to grayscale. You can schedule Wind Down for specific times, or manually turn it on/off.

Quick Settings (Developer Options):

Some Android phones provide a quicker way to access grayscale through developer options. However, enabling developer options can change other phone settings, so proceed with caution:

  1. Enable Developer Options: Go to Settings > About phone (or About device). Find the "Build number" and tap it rapidly seven times. You should see a message indicating that developer options are now enabled.

  2. Access Developer Options: Go back to the main Settings menu. You should now see a "Developer options" entry.

  3. Simulate Color Space: Within Developer options, look for "Simulate color space" or "Simulate color blindness." Tap on it and select "Monochromacy" (which means grayscale).

Important Note: Disabling developer options will revert your grayscale setting to normal color mode.

Turning Off Colors on iOS (iPhone/iPad)

iOS provides a grayscale option within its Accessibility settings:

  1. Open Settings: Open the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Access Accessibility: Scroll down and tap on "Accessibility."

  3. Display & Text Size: Tap on "Display & Text Size."

  4. Color Filters: Tap on "Color Filters."

  5. Enable Color Filters and Select Grayscale: Toggle the "Color Filters" switch to the "On" position. Then, select "Grayscale" from the available filter options.

To quickly toggle Grayscale on or off on iOS, you can set up an Accessibility Shortcut:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
  2. Select "Color Filters."
  3. Now, triple-clicking the side button (or the Home button on older iPhones) will toggle grayscale on and off.
