Is a Mosquito Afraid of Cold?

Published in Mosquito Biology 1 min read

Mosquitoes are cold-blooded creatures, meaning their body temperature is dependent on the environment. They prefer warm temperatures and become less active when it gets cold. As temperatures drop below 50°F, mosquitoes become less capable of seeking blood meals and their metabolic processes slow down. Mosquito larvae development is also interrupted by cold temperatures.

Although mosquitoes can survive in cold environments, their genetic programming drives them to seek warmer areas. They are more likely to be found in air-conditioned rooms, but their natural instinct is to find a warmer location.

This means that while mosquitoes might not be "afraid" of cold in the human sense, they are certainly affected by it and will seek to avoid cold temperatures whenever possible.
