What age is NR?

Published in Movie Ratings 1 min read

NR stands for "Not Rated," meaning the content has not been reviewed by a rating board, so it doesn't have an associated age. It's not an age-based rating like PG-13 or TV-MA.

Instead of indicating an age, NR simply means that the movie or TV show hasn't been officially rated. This could be for several reasons:

  • Independent Films: Some independent filmmakers choose not to submit their work for rating.
  • Unreleased Content: Content may be unrated if it's a director's cut, extended version, or simply hasn't been released widely enough to warrant a rating.
  • Foreign Films: Foreign films may not have been submitted to the MPAA or TV Parental Guidelines for rating.

Because NR films and TV shows aren't rated, it's up to the viewer to determine if the content is suitable for them, considering the potential for mature themes, language, violence, or sexual content.
