Can we do MRI during periods?

Published in MRI Scans 1 min read

Yes, you can have an MRI during your period.

The menstrual cycle does not generally affect the accuracy of MRI scans. A study has shown that MRI accuracy is not affected by the menstrual cycle.

  • MRI Accuracy: The timing of your menstrual cycle typically doesn't impact the quality or results of most MRI scans.

  • Medication: In some MRI procedures, medications like hyoscine butylbromide (Buscopan) may be administered to minimize bowel movement. For example, "All patients received 20mg of intravenous (IV) hyoscine butylbromide (Buscopan) immediately prior to imaging to minimise bowel peristalsis."

Therefore, unless specifically instructed otherwise by your doctor, you can proceed with your MRI scan as scheduled, regardless of whether you are menstruating.
