Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) is often referred to as the first stage of MS.
While CIS might be considered the initial stage, it's important to understand its nuances:
-
CIS doesn't technically meet the diagnostic criteria for MS at this stage. This is because the damage to the central nervous system has not yet been shown to have occurred at different times.
-
CIS is considered a monofocal episode if only one neurological symptom is present. For example, an attack of optic neuritis.
In summary, while not definitively MS, CIS is often considered the initial presentation that may lead to a diagnosis of MS later.
