Why Does Inner Bicep Hurt?

Published in Muscle Pain 2 mins read

Inner bicep pain is typically caused by muscle strain or injury, but other less common factors can also contribute.

Common Causes of Inner Bicep Pain

  • Muscle Strain/Tear: This is the most frequent cause. Overuse, improper lifting technique, or sudden forceful movements can strain or tear the biceps muscle or its tendons. Pain is often localized to the inner bicep area.

  • Bruising: Trauma to the area, such as a direct blow, can cause bruising and pain.

  • Tendinitis/Tendinosis: Inflammation or degeneration of the bicep tendon where it attaches near the elbow or shoulder can radiate pain into the inner bicep.

Less Common Causes

  • Nerve Compression: Nerves that run through the arm can sometimes be compressed, causing pain that may be felt in the inner bicep.

  • Referred Pain: Pain from another area, such as the shoulder or neck, can sometimes be felt in the bicep.

  • Rarely: Heart Attack: In extremely rare cases, left arm pain, including the inner bicep, can be a symptom of a heart attack. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, and sweating. If you suspect a heart attack, seek immediate medical attention.

What To Do

The appropriate treatment depends on the cause of the pain.

  • Mild Strains: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are often effective. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help.

  • More Severe Injuries: A doctor's evaluation may be necessary. Physical therapy, immobilization, or, in rare cases, surgery might be required.

  • Concerning Symptoms: Seek medical advice if the pain is severe, doesn't improve with home treatment, or is accompanied by other symptoms like numbness, tingling, or weakness. And again, seek immediate medical attention if you suspect a heart attack.
