How to Clean a Cuticle?

Published in Nail Care 2 mins read

To clean a cuticle, manicurist Nicole Wong recommends starting with a warm soapy soak and gentle pushing.

Here's a breakdown of how to properly clean your cuticles:

Steps to Cleaning Your Cuticles:

  1. Soak Your Nails: Submerge your fingertips in warm, soapy water for a few minutes. This helps to soften the cuticles and surrounding skin, making them easier to manipulate.

  2. Push Back Your Cuticles: Gently push back your cuticles using a wooden stick (orange wood stick) or a cuticle pusher. This separates the cuticle from the nail plate. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this can damage the nail bed.

  3. Trim Dead Skin (Optional): Only trim the dead or loose skin around the cuticle area. Avoid cutting the actual cuticle itself, as this can lead to infection. Use cuticle nippers to carefully remove any hangnails or dry skin. Over-trimming can cause damage and increase the risk of infection.

Why Soaking is Important:

Soaking cuticles in soapy water makes them more pliable and easier to work with. It also helps to hydrate the surrounding skin, preventing dryness and cracking.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid Cutting the Cuticle: Cutting the cuticle completely removes the protective barrier against bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of infection.

  • Moisturize: After cleaning your cuticles, apply a cuticle oil or moisturizer to keep them hydrated and prevent dryness.

By following these steps, you can effectively clean your cuticles and maintain healthy, well-groomed nails.
