What is the full form of SROM?

Published in Obstetrics Terminology 1 min read

The full form of SROM is Spontaneous Rupture of Membranes.

In obstetrics, Spontaneous Rupture of Membranes (SROM) refers to the breaking of the amniotic sac (also known as the bag of waters) on its own, before labor begins. This is in contrast to Artificial Rupture of Membranes (AROM), where a healthcare provider intentionally breaks the amniotic sac to induce or augment labor.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Spontaneous: Meaning it happens naturally, without medical intervention.
  • Rupture: Referring to the tearing or breaking of the amniotic sac.
  • Membranes: The amniotic sac, composed of two membranes (the amnion and the chorion), that contains the amniotic fluid and surrounds the fetus during pregnancy.

Typically, spontaneous labor follows SROM within a certain timeframe. As the provided reference notes, in about 60-80% of women, spontaneous labor follows SROM within 24 hours, and approximately 90% within 48 hours. If the rupture occurs before 37 weeks of gestation, it's considered preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).
