What is the Ocean for Kids?

Published in Oceanography 2 mins read

The ocean is a huge body of salty water that covers most of the Earth! Think of it as a giant playground for amazing creatures and a really important part of our planet.

Why is the Ocean Important?

  • It covers a lot of Earth: Almost 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by the ocean. That's more than half!
  • It holds almost all the water: The ocean contains about 98% of all the water on Earth. That's a lot of water!
  • It's home to amazing animals: From tiny plankton to giant whales, the ocean is full of incredible creatures.
  • It helps us breathe: The ocean produces a lot of the oxygen we breathe.
  • It affects our weather: The ocean helps to control the Earth's temperature and weather patterns.

One Big Ocean, Five Main Areas

Even though there's really just one big world ocean, we usually divide it into five main areas:

  • The Pacific Ocean: The biggest ocean!
  • The Atlantic Ocean: The second biggest, between the Americas and Europe/Africa.
  • The Indian Ocean: Located mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, near India.
  • The Arctic Ocean: The smallest and coldest ocean, located around the North Pole.
  • The Southern (or Antarctic) Ocean: Surrounds Antarctica.

What Can You Find in the Ocean?

The ocean is full of all sorts of things, including:

  • Saltwater: Unlike the water you drink, ocean water is salty.
  • Seaweed and plants: Just like on land, there are plants that grow in the ocean.
  • Fish: Many different kinds of fish live in the ocean.
  • Marine mammals: Whales, dolphins, and seals are mammals that live in the ocean.
  • Invertebrates: Creatures without backbones, like jellyfish, crabs, and starfish.
  • Coral reefs: Colorful underwater structures made by tiny animals.
  • Sand and rocks: Just like on land, the ocean floor has sand and rocks.

The ocean is a vital part of our planet, providing us with oxygen, food, and so much more. It's a fascinating place to explore and learn about!
