How do you test your breath?

Published in Oral Hygiene 2 mins read

You can test your breath at home using a simple wrist-licking test.

Here's a breakdown of how to do it:

  • Lick Your Wrist: Lick the inside of your wrist. Make sure to use the back of your tongue, as this is where the bacteria that contribute to bad breath often reside.

  • Let it Dry: Allow the saliva to dry for a few seconds (about 5-10 seconds).

  • Sniff: Sniff the area you licked.

  • Evaluate the Smell: If you notice an unpleasant or foul odor, there's a good chance you have bad breath (halitosis).

This method works because the saliva on your wrist collects odor-causing bacteria from your mouth. The scent you detect from your dried saliva can give you an indication of how your breath might smell to others.

While the wrist-licking test is a quick and easy way to get a general idea of your breath's freshness, it is not foolproof. Other ways to tell if you have bad breath include:

  • Asking Someone: This is the most direct way to find out.
  • Dental Professionals: A dentist or hygienist can identify the cause of and treat bad breath.
  • Looking at Your Tongue: If your tongue has a thick white or yellow coating, it could indicate the presence of odor-causing bacteria.
