Which organ will regrow?

Published in Organ Regeneration 1 min read

The liver is the only organ in the human body that can fully regenerate after damage. This means that even if up to 90% of the liver is removed, it can grow back to its original size. This remarkable ability is due to the presence of specialized liver cells called hepatocytes, which can divide and differentiate into various liver cell types, effectively replacing damaged tissue.

However, it's important to note that while the liver has impressive regenerative capabilities, it's not invincible. Many diseases and exposures can damage the liver beyond the point of repair. In such cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.

Factors affecting liver regeneration:

  • Extent of damage: The more damage the liver sustains, the more challenging it is to fully regenerate.
  • Age: Younger individuals tend to have a faster rate of liver regeneration compared to older individuals.
  • Overall health: Individuals with pre-existing health conditions may have a slower or less efficient liver regeneration process.
