What color are mitochondria?

Published in Organelle Color 1 min read

Mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, are actually orangish-brown in color. This coloration stems from the various chemicals that make up these organelles, including cytochrome (red and green), flavin (yellow), and iron-sulfur clusters (brown).

While they are colored, mitochondria are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Scientists rely on specialized microscopes and dyes to visualize their intricate structure and function within cells.
