How Do You Tape a Ceiling for Painting?

Published in Painting Techniques 1 min read

Taping a ceiling for painting involves applying painter's tape to create clean lines and protect adjacent surfaces. Here's the easiest method:

  1. Choose Wide Painter's Tape: Opt for painter's tape that is at least 3 inches wide for better protection.

  2. Apply the Tape: Run a strip of the painter's tape around the entire perimeter of the ceiling where it meets the wall.

  3. Adhere Only the Top Edge: Carefully apply only the top edge of the tape to the ceiling. Leave the bottom edge of the tape unattached. This creates a flap or overhang.

  4. Attach Plastic Sheeting: Slide lightweight plastic sheeting under the unattached, exposed edge of the tape.

  5. Secure the Plastic: Gently press the unattached edge of the tape onto the plastic sheeting to secure it. This creates a barrier that protects the walls from drips and splatters during painting. You may need additional tape to hold the plastic in place, depending on its weight.

This technique simplifies the process and offers reliable protection for your walls. Remember to remove the tape carefully after painting, pulling it away at a 45-degree angle to avoid peeling off the paint.
