A papaya can be male, female, or bisexual (hermaphrodite). Papayas aren't strictly one sex.
Papaya Sex Types Explained
Papayas exhibit a unique characteristic in that they can have different flower types, influencing their sex. According to research, papayas can produce three possible flower types:
- Male (Staminate): These flowers only contain male reproductive organs.
- Female (Carpellate): These flowers only contain female reproductive organs.
- Bisexual (Hermaphrodite): These flowers contain both male and female reproductive organs.
More than one flower type can be present on a single papaya plant at a time. This means a papaya plant isn't necessarily fixed as purely male or purely female.
