You can create a loop large enough to walk through from a single sheet of paper by using a specific cutting and folding technique.
Here's how to do it:
-
Fold the Paper: Fold the paper in half lengthwise (width-wise is easiest).
-
Initial Slit: Starting at the folded edge, cut a slit inward towards the open edge. Stop just before you reach the edge (leave about ½ inch).
-
Alternating Cuts: Now, alternate cutting from the folded edge and the open edge.
- Make a cut from the folded edge, parallel to the previous cut, stopping short of the open edge.
- Then, make a cut from the open edge, parallel to the previous cut, stopping short of the folded edge.
- Continue alternating these cuts along the entire length of the folded paper. Be sure to space your cuts relatively evenly.
-
Final Cut: Make the last cut starting from the folded edge, similar to the first cut.
-
Cut the Folds (Except the Ends): Carefully cut along the folded edges between the cuts you've made. Important: Do NOT cut the folded edges at the very ends of the paper. This leaves the ends of the paper connected.
-
Unfold and Expand: Carefully unfold the paper. You should now have a large, continuous loop that you can step through.
Why this works:
The alternating cuts create a chain-like structure when unfolded. By leaving the ends uncut, you create one large loop instead of many small ones. The closer together the cuts, the larger the overall loop will be, and the easier it will be to pass through.
