What is Trichin?

Published in Parasitic Infections 1 min read

Trichin is short for Trichinella, which refers to a type of roundworm parasite that causes the infection trichinosis (also called trichinellosis).

Understanding Trichinella and Trichinosis

Trichinella parasites live and reproduce within a host body. They commonly infect animals, including:

  • Bears
  • Cougars
  • Walruses
  • Foxes
  • Wild boars
  • Domestic pigs

Humans typically contract trichinosis by consuming undercooked meat from animals infected with Trichinella larvae (immature worms). Once ingested, the larvae mature in the intestine and then migrate to muscle tissues throughout the body.

Key Points About Trichinella:

  • Type: Roundworm parasite
  • Disease Caused: Trichinosis (or Trichinellosis)
  • Primary Hosts: Various mammals, including pigs, bears, and other carnivores.
  • Transmission: Typically through consuming undercooked infected meat.
