How Do You Set Soft Pastels?

Published in Pastel Art 2 mins read

Soft pastels are set using a fixative spray. This is done to stabilize the pastel media, hold it in place on the paper, and provide protection from dust.

Why Use Fixative?

  • Soft pastels are prone to smudging and can easily be disturbed.
  • A fixative helps prevent accidental smearing and the loss of pigment.
  • It protects pastel artwork for long term display and storage.

How Fixative Works

According to research, fixative contains a fast-drying liquid as a base, typically:

  • Alcohol
  • Casein
  • Resin

These liquids are designed to bind the pastel particles to the surface of the paper.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Fixative

  1. Prepare your workspace: Ensure the area is well-ventilated and free from dust and debris.
  2. Position your pastel artwork: Place the artwork flat on a protected surface, like a piece of cardboard.
  3. Test the fixative: Before spraying on the artwork, test the fixative on a separate piece of paper. This helps you gauge spray pattern and amount.
  4. Hold the fixative can 10-12 inches away from the artwork: Apply in light, even, and consistent strokes. Avoid applying too much at once, to prevent running of the fixative and pastel colors.
  5. Apply thin, multiple coats: Instead of one heavy coat, apply several light coats, allowing each to dry before applying the next. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
  6. Dry thoroughly: Allow the artwork to dry completely before touching or handling it. Drying time depends on the product and temperature.
  7. Store safely: Once dry, store the art work flat, with an acid free paper overlay.

Important Considerations

  • Type of Fixative: There are different types of fixatives available, so choose the one that's best suited for pastels.
  • Ventilation: Always use fixatives in a well-ventilated area, as the fumes can be harmful.
  • Light application: Use a light touch, multiple thin coats are much better than one thick coat.
  • Drying time: Be patient and allow the fixative to dry thoroughly.
  • Color changes: Be aware that fixatives may slightly darken or alter the colors of your pastels.

Types of Fixative

Fixative Type Base Characteristics
Alcohol-based Alcohol Dries quickly, can be less forgiving
Casein-based Casein Creates a matte finish, more forgiving
Resin-based Resin Creates a more glossy finish, best suited for final fixative

By following these steps, you can effectively set soft pastels, preserving their beauty and protecting them from damage.
